Thirty years ago, the Miami-Dade Drug Court Program became the first in the nation to give eligible, low-level offenders the option to pursue treatment, recovery and a second chance over punitive incarceration. Since its inception, the program has helped thousands of Miami-Dade residents across multiple communities find their way to sobriety and a better tomorrow. The Miami-Dade Drug Court program diverts eligible defendants to treatment programs rather than levying criminal prosecution. Recovery Unplugged is a proud partner of the program, and our Miami-Dade County Court Liaison services have helped many who have been impacted by substance use disorder overcome their addiction and related legal troubles.
ABOUT THE MIAMI-DADE DRUG COURT PROGRAM
Participation in the Miami-Dade Drug Court Program is dictated by language in the Florida Statute 948.08 (6)(a). Generally speaking, participants must be must be charged with possessing or purchasing drugs, tampering with evidence solicitation for purchase, obtaining a prescription by fraud and the state attorney must agree to diversion. Defendants who have a history of violent crime, have been arrested for drug sale or trafficking, or have more than two previous non-drug felony convictions, are typically ineligible. The program lasts for 12 months and requires continued compliance, which includes regular drug screenings, court appearances to illustrate continued adherence to guidelines and more.
In addition to providing comprehensive medical and behavioral health treatment, Recovery Unplugged offers thorough and expert guidance through each phase of the drug court program, including paperwork, compliance assistance, legal advocacy and more. A minimum of two urinalysis per week is required and attendance to Twelve-Step Fellowship meetings may also be required. Successful completion of the program allows participants to avoid incarceration and have the records from their legal proceedings sealed. It is overseen by the Honorable Judge Jeri B. Cohen, and aided by a designated branch of the Miami-Dade legal system.
