Expert, Compassionate Care at the Intersection of Trauma and Substance Use

Start Healing from Addiction and Trauma Now

Addiction and trauma are closely linked. It’s incredibly common for people to cope with acute or ongoing traumatic experiences by turning to drugs and alcohol. At the same time, prolonged and untreated alcohol and drug abuse give way to new traumas that require their own care and intervention. People who experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are considerably more likely to develop substance use disorder, with some estimates putting this likelihood at 14 times higher than individuals who don’t.1

Recovery Unplugged offers comprehensive and supportive trauma-informed care if you or your loved one are experiencing simultaneous trauma and substance abuse. You don’t have to be afraid or ashamed to ask for help, and you don’t have to stay locked in this cycle forever.

Trauma-Informed Treatment

Traumatic experiences can lead to a lack of self-worth, as well as fear, anxiety, depression, and a host of other persistent mental health issues. Sometimes people use drugs or alcohol to dull the pain or escape the reality of these circumstances. Sometimes they may engage in substance abuse out of a need for belonging or acceptance that stems from past trauma. Some of the most common types of trauma that can lead to alcohol or drug abuse include:

  • Domestic Violence
  • Sexual Assault
  • Financial Trauma
  • Violent Attacks
  • Family
  • The Death of a Friend or Loved One
  • Relationship Trauma (Break-Ups, Infidelity, Etc.)

Quality and effective care for co-occurring substance abuse and trauma requires a dual-diagnosis approach of treating the immediate physical and emotional impact of substance abuse while also providing separate parallel care for the trauma that trigger and sustain it.

Signs of Trauma and PTSD

Even if you or your loved one are living trauma every day, it isn’t always easy to pinpoint the origins of your symptoms or connect your struggles with a single experience or trigger. Additionally, it’s common to think that you’ve “gotten over” a traumatic experience even though it imprints itself on your daily behavior and overall lifestyle. In addition to self-medication with drugs or alcohol, some of the more common symptoms of trauma and PTSD include, but are not limited to:

  • Chronic and Persistent Fear
  • Lack of Self-Worth
  • Depression
  • Inability to Face the Traumatic Experience
  • Difficulty Moving Forward in Life
  • Fear of New Things
  • Inability to Form Healthy Relationships and Trust People

Treatments that address symptoms of both PTSD and SUD concurrently are the most effective in addressing these complex and interconnected issues.2
