Talksicology Episode 49

Taking Care

Episode Synopsis

On this episode, Jason and Joseph talk with Marcus Sanchez, from Austin, Texas.

Marcus is a person in recovery and the Deputy DIrector of Strategic Partnerships at the Ashwell Clinic, which specializes in sexual health and wellness.

Marcus grew up in Palacios, Texas. A chaotic homelife laid the foundation for his story. Marcus’ perseverance proves that no matter what you’re going through, there is always a better way.

Marcus’ father was in and out of treatment for alcohol. He recalls visiting on family day when he was 9-years-old. A negative interaction at the treatment center gave Marcus a core belief that therapy was bad. Marcus discusses the therapy stigma in the Hispanic community that confirmed his belief.

Marcus struggled to fit in as a queer kid and tried to stay under the radar growing up. This changed when he discovered alcohol at age 14. He finally felt comfortable being around people.

Although he told himself he wouldn’t end up like his father, his drinking escalated over the next few years. He also began using marajuana, mushrooms, and LSD.

Marcus graduated high school and moved to Austin, Texas where his drug use escalated. He discusses the “party and play” subculture in the gay community, and how drugs and sex are often intertwined.

Marcus began his recovery work after various negative consequences. He believes his willingness made the difference. He works with a sponsor, does step work and walks others through it as well.

Today, Marcus uses his lived experiences for his work in sexual health. He has worked closely with the LGBTQIA+ community for over 15 years.
