Last night news broke that Game of Thrones star Kit Harington, who played the ever-true and universally beloved Jon Snow on the blockbuster series, entered treatment for alcohol and stress-related issues prior to the show’s swan song. While Daenerys made the ultimate heel turn and scorched virtually everything in her path in a character arc that had the world watching with their heads cocked at a 180-degree angle, her loyal onscreen counselor, would-be king and reluctant assassin was struggling to keep it all together when the cameras turned off. In a recent interview with Esquire, Harington admits to having a “full-on breakdown” while filming the show’s series finale. He has reportedly spent the last month at the wellness center.
A Common Problem for An Uncommon Man
Harington attributes his need for alcohol treatment and professional stress management, in part, to professional pressures and the crushing weight of expectation. “I felt I had to feel that I was the most fortunate person in the world, when actually, I felt very vulnerable. I had a shaky time in my life around there — like I think a lot of people do in their 20’s, ” he tells reporters. While very few of us are charged with being a principle narrative custodian of one of the world’s most beloved entertainment properties, many of us who enter alcohol and substance abuse treatment do so to cope with stress related to our jobs, families, relationships and other lifestyle obligations.
Kit Harington made the proactive and critical choice of getting professional treatment for alcohol and stress because he knew his life was becoming unmanageable without proper help. His decision and subsequent path to treatment reinforces the reality that everyone needs help from time to time, and that when you seem to “have it all”, there’s that much more to lose if you don’t address your issues.
- Recovery Unplugged wishes Kit Harington a full recovery, and would like to remind everyone that when life gets overwhelming, it’s OK to ask for help.
